⚠️ Safety & Crowd Tips
Carry enough water and electrolytes — most of the walk happens during monsoon heat and humidity; dehydration is the most common issue among Kanwariyas.
Wear well-broken-in footwear (or go barefoot only if trained for it) — blisters and foot injuries are the top reason pilgrims drop out midway.
Avoid peak crowd days — the final 2–3 days before Shivratri (this year, 9–11 August 2026) see the heaviest crowds and traffic restrictions on key highways.
Start walking early morning, before 6 AM, to beat both the heat and the densest crowd hours.
Travel in a group, especially at night or on long stretches — most official camps and langars are spaced along main routes, but groups are safer in case of medical issues.
Carry a valid ID at all times — checkpoints on UP and Uttarakhand stretches require it.
Carry a basic first-aid kit — blister pads, ORS sachets, and any personal medication, since government medical camps can get overwhelmed during peak days.
Stick to marked camps (police, medical, or Kanwar Sangh–run) for rest stops — they carry basic medical aid and clean drinking water.
Keep a charged phone and local emergency numbers — Haridwar and major UP towns set up dedicated Kanwar Yatra helplines during Shravan; note these before you start.
Check local traffic advisories — NH334 and connecting highways see one-way diversions and vehicle bans during peak Kanwar days; budget 2–3 extra hours if driving a support vehicle.
Keep music volume controlled near residential areas and hospitals — this is enforced in both Delhi and UP.
Don't rest the kanwar on the ground if you're observing strict Dak Kanwar rules — plan your rest stops accordingly with support from your group.
