The Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple on Mangalagiri hill in Andhra Pradesh is one of the best-known Narasimha temples in South India. The deity appears as a wide-open mouth, and devotees pour panakam, a drink of jaggery and water, into it.
Tradition says that the Lord accepts only half of the panakam poured in, and the rest flows back as prasadam for the devotees.
Story of Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple
The temple is on the hill of Mangalagiri, between Vijayawada and Guntur, and there is also a second temple at the foot of the hill dedicated to Lakshmi Narasimha. The hill temple is reached by a flight of steps and a road.
The hilltop shrine is open only for part of the day, and the sanctum is a small chamber, with the deity formed in the shape of a mouth.
