The Gomateshwara Temple at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district, Karnataka, is a revered Jain pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Bahubali, also called Gomateshwara. A monolithic statue of Bahubali, about 57 feet tall, stands on top of Vindhyagiri hill.
The statue symbolises renunciation, forgiveness and victory over worldly attachments.
Story of Gomateshwara Temple (Shravanabelagola)
The statue was carved from a single block of granite and consecrated around 981 CE under the patronage of Chavundaraya, a minister of the Ganga dynasty. It is among the tallest monolithic statues in the world.
Pilgrims climb about 600 steps cut into the rock to reach the statue, and the town below has temples and a historic tank.
