Shantadurga is not just a deity; she is the mediator of peace. Her legend is central to the spiritual fabric of Goa. The Peacemaker: According to the Puranas, a fierce battle once broke out between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. To prevent universal destruction, Lord Brahma prayed to the Goddess Adishakti. She appeared as Shantadurga, taking Shiva by one hand and Vishnu by the other to reconcile them. Iconography: The main idol depicts the Goddess holding two serpents, representing Shiva and Vishnu, held in a state of balance and peace. Architectural Fusion: The temple is famous for its unique style, featuring Roman-arched windows, stained glass, and a majestic six-story Deepastambha (lamp tower) that illuminates the night during festivals. Historical Resilience: Originally located in Keloshi, the deity was shifted to Kavlem in the 18th century to protect it during the Portuguese era. The current structure was built during the reign of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.
