The Tripura Sundari Temple, locally called Matabari, is in Udaipur in the Gomati district of Tripura. It is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas, where, according to tradition, part of the right foot of Sati fell.
The Goddess is worshipped here as Tripura Sundari, also known as Tripureshwari and Shodashi, and the temple is the most important shrine in Tripura.
Story of Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari)
The main shrine was built in the early sixteenth century by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya of Tripura and is in the Bengali ek-ratna style, with a single square sanctum and a dome. The temple stands on a hill shaped like a tortoise, known as Kurma Peetha.
The sanctum holds two images of the Goddess, one large and one small, and a pond called Kalyan Sagar lies beside the temple.
