The Only Swayambhu Jyotirlinga
Located on the banks of the holy Shipra River, Mahakaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), deriving currents of power (Shakti) from within itself. It is the only Jyotirlinga facing south (Dakshinamukhi).

The current temple is a five-storey architectural marvel constructed during the mid-18th century, showcasing a blend of Bhumija, Chalukya, and Maratha styles. The temple is also revered as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethams, believed to be the place where the upper lip of Goddess Sati fell.
