Yamunotri Temple is situated in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,235 metres near the river source. The temple was built in 1839 by Sundarshan Shah who was the king of the cultural center of Tehri. There was a small shrine at the site prior to the construction of the temple.

Constructed in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur, the temple features traditional Himalayan architecture with a striking red facade and intricate wood carvings. Pilgrims embark on a picturesque trek to reach the shrine, with the journey itself part of the spiritual experience. Adjacent to the temple, the Surya Kund hot water spring and the Divya Shila rock pillar add to the sacred ambiance, enriching the pilgrimage with rituals and offerings.
